Okay, this is my last post on Global Warming, or else I am going to have to make a category for it.
So, today, everyone was gushing over the announcement that Rep. Peter Welch is off-setting the carbon output of his DC office.
How?
A Vermont company allows you to compute the carbon footprint of your household based on energy use and travel. Then, you can pay a yearly or monthly fee based on the amount of carbon dioxide that you are responsible for. That money is used to create wind and/or methane power – you get to choose.
Here is my proposal. Every single American that is concerned about global warming needs to sign up for this. That way, not only can liberals be free from blame when they engage in their rants against Big Oil, but also, conservatives can claim another victory in the free-market versus government-regulation debate.
That’s what I call win-win.
I might sign up for it myself. After all, $37/month is a small price to pay to be able to tell JD Ryan to kiss my carbon neutral behind!

Wow. Wonderful, Charity.
This carbon neutral bullshit is the rebirth of the recycling nonsense. Sure, both play a small role in looking at a problem BUT both let liberals feel all too happy about doing basically nothing.
I mean, come on, have you seen how happy the liberals are to drop off their recyling trash? Good grief.
Liberals bow to the church of money guilt: they pay to absolve themselves of their “sins.”
I wonder if Peter Welch has stopped to ponder how many of those “minimum” wage earners he champions will be able to play his “carbon neutral” game?
You go, girl.

I was going to say something similar, but not in such a snarky way. A couple of things- you cannot put a dollar value on the damage pollution does to the Earth. That’s silly. Secondly, even if the money eventually funds cleaner energy production, that doesn’t “offset” shit. That’s a false image. The damage you’ve done with your carbon emissions doesn’t get resolved by the wind farm. We’re still counting on the EARTH to cleanse herself of our soot.
I have to agree with psycho boy. This is just a way of making people feel better about their sins. It’s like giving money to Bob Tilton or letting the barber bleed you. If you think they’re getting a dollar of my soul-sucked, spoken-for-many-times-over money, you’re out of your mind Charity. And I will continue to burn incandescent lights and drive my car without feeling guilty, primarily because I don’t fancy myself a sucker.
Question- Do the people paying for “carbon-net-neutrality” get a return on their investment? Why not just buy stock in a wind energy company?
I’m not against wind and methane energy. I’m against this intellectually dishonest Slick-Rick ad campaign. Check that website.
Did Welch really get Bush’s autograph? That’s disgusting.

I don’t really have an opinion on this particular thing because I haven’t thought about it much, but if I’m understanding this correctly, Charity, are you also saying that in an ideal situation, those who aren’t concerned about global warming are free to just keep doing what they’re doing?
Whatever legislation (state, national, global) eventually comes into place, ‘voluntary compliance’ is not going to be a solution on many of them (i.e. if you care about global warming you can do something about it. Our problem right now is we have too many people that don’t care about it. And that’s going to change.
Welch’s thing is a small gesture, it’s still a good thing so I’m not going to give him grief over it, but things are going to have to go way further than that to truly fix this. And like it or not, it IS going to involve a change in personal behavior to some extent.
And I’m a bit insulted.. others have paid much more than $37 bucks to kiss my behind… Are you cheap or something?
