I can't speak to the economics of this ... that is Burlington's prerogative. I like the concept of magnet schools, but under the current (primarily) state and federal paradigms they don't make sense.

A magnet school would make sense if and only if schools didn't have to meet such identical standards. Magnet schools work well where a real diversity of educational approaches and goals exist.

Until educational (not school) choice is given a shot, things like charter or magnet schools make little sense in my opinion.

I also agree that local issues should be kept to special or regular town meetings ... for the reasons you broach.

I am in complete agreement with this post. That is a staggering amount of money. 226 Million!? The word "RIDICULOUS" comes to mind.

This should wait until March, if for no other reason than to give taxpayers a little time to digest this proposal. A 43% property tax in 10 years is huge. People are already selling their houses and leaving Burlington because of taxes.

And why are Barnes and Wheeler turning into "magnet schools?" Is it possible the school board hasn't really given up on the 'socio-economic integration' nonsense?

There is no reason to rush into this. I agree that it should NOT be on the ballot in November.
