So, it doesn't sound like an actual plan has been hashed out just yet, which I thought was the schedule a while back...maybe things have changed. Like I said before, I haven't been keeping up on this issue like I should.

I ho-heartedly agree that tearing the building down would be a huge waste of time & money and that redeveloping it so that city can expand it's tax base is a MUCH better idea. As always though in VT, there are forces out there that have the knee-jerk reaction to try & block any kind of development/re-development project...just like there are those out there that have the opposite knee-jerk reaction to be in favor of any development project at any cost. The plan as I remember it for the Moran Plant was a good compromise IMO.

I also find it interesting that the GDA folks said that they would bow out of the picture gracefully and not try to block the further redevelopment of the Moran Plant if they lost the vote last Town Meeting Day...hmmmm...

A 21 million dollar plan was already approved by voters last year, and now the city is trying to work out agreements with tenants. Lately there have been issues raised about whether the agreements offer taxpayers enough protections in case the tenants balk.

I would call this project "redevelopment" rather than "development." The building is already there, and it my opinion it's a very beautiful and historic treasure. The city should and will be using it to generate revenue, provide jobs, offer new recreational opportunities.

On a personal level I just really love the building. It would break my heart and make me very angry to see it torn down. What a wasteful and destructive idea. The voters have not lost confidence in the way the proposal is proceeding. The proposal is being hashed out. What did folks expect? There are a lot of moving parts and responsible grown-ups are trying to make sure it all goes right.

The impulse to destroy Moran does not serve the city's interests.

I was wondering how this issue was progressing. That comment was just from one of the "just-say-no-to-any-developmentat-at-any-cost" crowd over at the GDA...no surprise there. Does the City have an actual plan with financing that the voters can vote on this fall??
