I just saw this on C-SPAN.

“Michael Steele, Former Lt. Gov. of Maryland was elected the new Chairman of the Republican National Committee. He received 91 votes on the sixth ballot. Eighty Five votes were needed to win.”

The video of his acceptance speech will be available soon.

In the meantime, here is his speech at the RNC convention last fall.  There’s some good stuff in there; government should be limited so it never becomes powerful enough to infringe on the rights of individuals, change the tax code to let people keep more of their hard earned money, school choice, and the money quote, “drill, baby drill and drill now.”

  1. What, now we go and find our own “magic Negro”?

This is a very, very sad day for America. The election of Steele proves that the Republican party will not go in the direction they need to for the sake of our country. They can expect to be in the minority for quite some time to come.

Are you a true conservative or just a kool aid drinker? If you are a true conservative then you would listen to what this other true conservative has to say about him.

Steve Deace is so right about him.

He’s a RINO. On that we can be clear. This proves that the Republican Party’s move to the Left might be a permanent legacy of the Bush years.

  2. Judging by what Steele had to say this morning on Fox News Sunday, it does not seem like he is a RINO, or that he plans to take the RNC in that direction.

  3. Sigh…I’ve stuck with you Charity because I thought you were a thoughtful right-winged, libertarian influence, but anyone who thinks drill baby drill is going to save the Republican party, or the United States for that matter, has to get their head out of the sand. Let’s look towards the future and invest in the new economy, not stumble about in the 20th century.

  4. I appreciate your comment, Kerry. Mostly, I just thought that was a funny line. That said, I do not agree that finding domestic oil to offset our need for foreign oil, while we continue to develop alternative sources is “stumbl[ing] about in the 20th century.”

We have needs that can only be met at this time with oil. That fact is undeniable.

To continue to get that oil from the Middle East is irresponsible.

The other things I mentioned from Steele’s speech are very much right-wing libertarian, I have to point out.

We can never, ever, ever replace Middle East oil with oil found here within the confines of the USA. The numbers just simply don’t work out in any way, shape, or form. The “drill baby, drill” mantra is just mindless shilling for the GOP’s oil industry buddies. There are still trillions & trillions of dollars worth of oil in the ground all over the world, but it’s not really worth anything to these guys unless they get to drill it out.
