For those of you who watched She’s Right on Channel 17 last month, this will come as no surprise.
I support the Moran Plant redevelopment.
Like many other conservatives, I am wary of the $7 million the city will need to fund. Fortunately, this ballot question requires another vote on funding.
The land that the Moran Plant occupies is designated “filled lands” and it must be used for the common good.
Further, the residents of Burlington have made it clear in the past that we, as a whole, want this land to remain in control of the city.
That leaves few options for developing this prime piece of city real estate.
It is no secret that Burlington is in serious need of development that will increase her tax base. This project would do just that.
Furthermore, it would bring more people to Burlington to support our local economy.
I am usually opposed to big projects that will cost taxpayer dollars. The ideal situation in my view would be for the city to sell the land to a developer that has a plan consistent with the waterfront area.
This is not going to happen.
This current proposal is the next best thing.
I do not support the option of tearing it down.
I am a big supporter of green space. I would never support development at any of the city green spaces. I think they are a worthwhile investment for our city and part of what makes it so attractive to visitors and residents alike.
But we have green space at the waterfront.
Tearing down Moran would cost the city millions and all we would have to show for it is a piece of land that is unable to be developed.
The redevelopment proposal, while costing the city millions, would be an investment in the city’s future economic development.
